FONTANA, CA - Morgan Shepherd and his #89 Faith Motorsports Chevrolet just missed the 43-car starting field on Saturday for the Stater Brothers 300 at AutoClub Speedway.
Shepherd, who was fielding a new car built by CJM Racing, did not make any laps during the first practice session due to issues in technical inspection. He only got a handful of laps during the second session before having to qualify the car into the race on speed.
"We were qualifying a car on Saturday that had only seen six green flag laps," Shepherd said. "Any time you have a new car you need some practice to get it set up and adjusted. We just didn't get the track time we needed."
Shepherd said inspection will likely go much smoother at Las Vegas this weekend since he will be running the same car. He also plans to change engines in an attempt to gain a little more horsepower.
"We will change engines and hope that helps us a little," he said. "We really need to make this race or I'm not sure what our future holds."
Shepherd, who finished 22nd at Daytona a week ago, needed the winnings from California to help pay for the team's two-week trip to the West Coast and its journey back home to North Carolina next week.
"We need some sponsorship in the worst way," he said.
